Tree Care Above the Upper Levels
North Vancouver’s neighbourhoods above the Upper Levels sit among some of the biggest trees on the North Shore. In Lynn Valley, Edgemont, Upper Lonsdale, Delbrook and Capilano Highlands, many lots back onto mature Douglas fir, western red cedar and western hemlock, with bigleaf maple along the ravines.
Slope and water shape most of the work here. Heavy winter rain saturates the soil on sloped lots, which puts extra strain on root systems and leaves tall conifers more exposed in windstorms. Careful pruning takes weight off where a tree carries the most risk, without removing more than the tree can afford to lose. You can read more about how we approach it on our pruning service page.
Most homes above the Upper Levels are in the District of North Vancouver, which regulates both pruning and removal of large and protected trees. We know those rules and write the arborist reports the District asks for. Some Upper Lonsdale properties fall within the City of North Vancouver instead, so we confirm which rules apply before any work starts.

What North Vancouver Homeowners Say
Posted on Google Timm RittbergTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. On-time, good price, really good job, and the two fellows were cheerful and friendly. And the tree is now safe and quite majestic. I would use these guys again in an instant.Posted on Google Ken BayneTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We were very impressed with the work of Tiger and Devine Aboricultural Solutions. Tiger came and scoped out the garden - trees, shrubs, groundcover and annuals - and recommended options for dealing with overcrowding and a persistent fungal problem. He completed the work in a professional and knowledgeable manner, doing more than we agreed to. When complete we were provided a summary of the work, a description of issue that arose and recommendations on improving the garde. We couldn't be happier.Posted on Google Challen Pride-ThorneTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. (updated review June 2026) This is my second experience with Devine Tree Services, and I continue to be impressed by the consistency of their service. Lawrence and Tim completed our winter pruning in December, while Jackson and George were the arborists on site for this summer's work. Both teams demonstrated excellent skill, professionalism, and attention to detail. I appreciated the company's communication throughout the process. The appointment reminders included the service instructions that owner Tiger Devine had provided during our consultation. Because the work was divided into winter and summer phases, the reminders were a helpful reference and reinforced our earlier discussions. The reminders also identified the arborists who would be performing the work. I value knowing who is coming to my property, and it allows me to personally thank the individuals involved and confidently recommend them to friends and neighbours. We have two old-growth Western Red Cedars that required deadwood removal, hazard mitigation, and a slight raising of the canopy. In addition, we requested that the height of a large rhododendron be reduced while retaining an attractive, natural profile. George took the time to review my request to reduce the rhododendron's height by two to three feet. He explained that such a significant reduction would result in a less natural appearance for a few seasons. Instead, he recommended a gentler pruning approach that moved the branches away from the house and surrounding maple tree without giving the shrub an overly "buzz-cut" appearance. When I came outside to view the final result—especially the cedars—I remarked that I loved how you could feel the change more than see it. The space seemed airier, and the light filtered beautifully through the trees. Jackson's skill in the canopy was evident in the finished result. I also appreciated the teamwork involved, with one arborist in the tree and another on the ground helping to ensure safety and offering a different vantage point on what needed adjustment. Together, they achieved a result that felt both natural and carefully considered. The team also provided pruning and shrub-care advice so that my husband and I can maintain the trees until the next time we need Devine Tree Services' help. They arrived as scheduled, communicated with us throughout the process, and left the property spotless when the work was complete. We would be happy to use Devine Tree Services again and recommend them to friends and neighbours. (December 2025) I highly recommend Devine Arboricultural Solutions. Tiger Devine, the company owner, provided valuable tree health advice during our consultation. After the appointment, we were promptly provided with an online estimate outlining pruning for each tree, divided into winter and summer work. Our winter work was completed by Lawrence and Tim, who did an excellent job pruning our cherry tree, lotus tree, and Japanese maple. They removed limbs to provide roof clearance, shaped outliers, and cleared deadwood, carefully ensuring that too much live foliage was not removed, which helps to maintain the trees’ health. I especially appreciated that they showed us the initial trim and discussed the remaining plan before completing the work. The work area was left spotless, with all cuttings removed and the ground thoroughly cleaned. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and friendly throughout.Posted on Google Makyta SimmsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My organization will not hesitate to hire Devine Aboricultural Solutions again in the future. Highly recommended!Posted on Google Wei GaoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tiger provided excellent service and a very professional arborist report for us. I really appreciated his patience, understanding, and clear communication. He helped us understand the city bylaws regarding tree protection and 'topping.' Tiger was incredibly helpful and provided us with great advice regarding our “leaning apple tree”. He took the time to explain the causes and options as well as general advice. He is very knowledgeable and I would highly recommend him.Posted on Google S KTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve been a client of Devine Arboricultural Solutions for several years and have consistently been impressed with the quality of their work. Most recently, Tiger’s team did an outstanding job trimming a very large, overgrown hedge on our property, completing the work with impressive efficiency. They also expertly pruned several trees, leaving everything looking clean, balanced, and well-maintained. Tim, Ed, Jackson, and Ollie were professional, courteous, and detailed-oriented throughout the process. Their care and workmanship really stood out. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their services to anyone looking for reliable, high-quality arboricultural work.

North Vancouver Tree Questions
Tree care in North Vancouver comes with specific permit requirements and bylaw considerations. Here are the questions we hear most often.
Do I need a permit to prune a tree in North Vancouver?
In the District of North Vancouver, yes, if the tree is a large diameter tree (75 cm or more across, measured 1.3 metres above the ground) or a protected tree. Pruning either needs a tree permit and an arborist report. Smaller trees that are not protected can be pruned without a permit. City of North Vancouver properties follow different rules.
Which trees are protected in the District of North Vancouver?
Protected trees include trees on District land, trees on slopes steeper than 36%, trees within 15 metres of the top of a watercourse bank, heritage and wildlife trees, replacement trees, and species including arbutus, Pacific yew, western white pine and yellow cedar. Many lots above the Upper Levels sit on slopes or near creeks, so it is worth checking before any work.
Can I top my trees in North Vancouver?
Not if the tree has never been topped. The District does not permit topping trees that have not been topped before. Retopping a previously topped tree may be considered when a certified arborist recommends it in the permit application.
What should I do about a hazardous tree?
The District can issue a hazard tree permit with no fee once the tree has been assessed by a qualified tree risk assessor. We hold that qualification and can write the report. If a tree is actively failing, emergency work can go ahead, but the failed parts must stay on site and a report is due within 48 hours.
When is the best time to prune trees in North Vancouver?
For most trees, late winter to early spring, before new growth starts. Some species do better with summer pruning, and bird nesting season from March 1 to August 31 can affect timing, so we plan each job around the tree and the rules.
